There’s much at stake—and plenty of opportunity for advisors savvy enough to seize it.

The road to retirement is long and winding. It’s easy to take a wrong turn and sometimes difficult to get back on route. But it is a journey that your clients have to take, regardless of their sense of direction, if they are to arrive at their desired destinations on schedule. Increasingly, investors are looking to their financial advisors to provide clear road maps.

Advisors have had to do some serious reconnaissance work to help clients navigate the ever-evolving retirement industry. Over the past 40 years, the amount of retirement money plowed into tax-advantaged savings plans—401(k), 403(b), SEPs, IRAs, and SIMPLE, to name a few—has grown to $23 trillion (as of December 31, 2013). Retirement savings now account for 34% of all household financial assets in the United States.1

There’s much at stake here—and plenty of opportunity for advisors savvy enough to seize it.

This blog, “The Road to Retirement,” will serve as a lively forum for exchanging ideas about a wide array of retirement challenges, strategies, and solutions.

Among the many areas in which financial advisors can add value, the single biggest opportunity is in rollover IRAs, a $321 billion annual business that continues to grow.1 a thorough understanding of the evolving intricacies of rollovers can be invaluable to advisors seeking to take advantage of this expanding market.

Of course, rollovers are just one facet of the complex and dynamic retirement industry. In my presentations across the country, I have had the opportunity to speak with many financial advisors about their clients’ retirement questions and concerns. In the weeks and months ahead, I’ll be using this blog to share my insights with a larger group. I invite you to subscribe to the blog, ask questions in the comments section, and engage in an ongoing dialogue about the crucial topic of retirement.
